Estimation of Halogens

  • Heating a known mass, (m) g, of the organic compound containing halogen with fuming nitric acid in the presence of silver nitrate in a hard glass tube known as Carius tube in a furnace.
  • Carbon and hydrogen present in the compound are oxidised to carbon dioxide and water respectively.
  • The halogen present in the compound forms corresponding silver halide, (AgX) which is filtered, washed, dried and weighed
  • If mass of (AgX) formed = (m_1), mass of (halogen ) present in it = $$ frac{text {mass of halogen in one mole of silver halide} }{text{molar mass of silver halide}} times m_1 $$. Let it be, (m_2) g
  • Mass % = ({m_2 over m} times 100)%
